Hi, I am
Barbara Roth, the owner and founder
of B R Custom Design. I started my
business in 1992, but my love of
sewing began many years before that.
I first learned
to sew from my mom. She had an old
black Singer machine that I learned
to sew on. She got me started and I
was fearless and thought I could
make anything and forged ahead.
Starting sewing
at such a young age, I did not have
Home Ec. classes yet in school but it
didn’t stop me. I made my own
clothes and proudly wore them! |

I
took sewing all through Junior High and High
School and was awarded the Home Ec. award for
sewing as a Senior. After high school and
going to school for Fashion Merchandising, I
thought I wanted to be a Fashion Designer
and went to school at Parsons School of
Design in NY. After the summer school
program, I realized I would not be a
designer but sewing was my strength. To this
day, the things I learned in the Draping
class are used, especially with my slipcover
work.
I
first started a business sewing clothing and
doing alterations. From clothes and bridal
to pillows and slipcovers, my business grew
to what it is today. I now specialize in
window coverings and slipcovers but now and
then, I do make some clothes and do repairs.
Over
the years I have continued to take classes,
go to seminars, and get involved with many
organizations for my business. I am a proud
member of WCAA and the
Slipcover Network. We never know it
all and by doing these things, we can stay
current and fresh.
The
latest project I have become involved with
is Special Spaces Chicagoland. This is an
amazing group that creates “special
bedrooms” for seriously ill children. I am
so happy to volunteer my time and talents to
these worthy sweet children and their
families. Please take a look at their
website
www.specialspaceschicagoland.org
and see all the wonderful things that
they do.
